GRANBY, Mo. — A local business owner is trying to save a historic building that is falling to shambles.

What building are we talking about?

It is the old hardware store located on Granby’s Main Street. Some ceiling holes and old floors might be expected, but it was much worse. I was able to speak to members of the community and got to learn the story on the building.

Jaime Arnell, Heavenly Notions Owner, “I’ve loved this building all my life and when I got the opportunity to purchase it the gentlemen gave me the key and said go on down there and check it out and I walked in and you went about forty, fifty feet in, and it’s just in the balcony’s are in the basement and it’s just devastating and I cried a little bit and then I was like you know what we’ve saved a couple other buildings in town this is durable. “

Jaime Arnell is a local business owner in Granby, she is wanting to fix the old hardware store on 112 Main Street to bring more revenue to the community.

“The key is fixing the roof once we get the roof finished that will save the whole structure and we start working on the floors I do have a bit of concern with this south wall it’s leaning a bit if that’s the case if it’s leaning too far then it’ll cost a lot more to fix that is a concern of mine right now.”

Though it will cost over hundred and thousands of dollars in repairs, she believes it is worth saving.

Steve Burnett President of the Granby Miners Museum, said, “This one is important to to try and get the businesses jumpstarted in town. We’ve got a progressive mayor here that want’s to start bringing more businesses to this town so this is something that will really help.”

Arnell has a lot of plans for the 1906 historic space.

“I would also like to see this other half rented to another business I’d like to move my quilt shop in here and bring in a bunch of entrepreneurs like maybe some boutiques bring in that down that Marktell has a bunch of vendors local artisans that make really cool stuff so I’d love to move their stuff down here maybe a tea room up in the balconies. I mean oh a bakery there’s a lot of things I’m sorry I geek out on it,” said Arnell.

She made a Facebook post about saving it and the community is jumping in to help.

“Well, Jaime can’t do this alone the only way this can happen is if people and this community and reaching out to those other communities across the Four State region that you broadcast too other people to donate to help a little person makes something grand happen again in Granby,” said Burnett.

Great news! The south wall is only leaning 8 inches and can be fixed! You may have heard Jamie Arnall, the owner of the old Granby Hardware building, say she was concerned about a contractor coming to check how much the south wall is leaning during last night’s story about saving the building on KSN 16. He says it is fixable! We are looking for KOAM TV to do a story this weekend so stay tuned. Jamie just set up a GoFundMe account due to popular request. Save the Hardware!

“Save the Hardware Store” campaign continues tonight at 9 pm on Fox and 10 pm on KOAM featuring Steve Burnett, Amy Tanner, and yours truly. Fundraising efforts are still underway and we are seeing a great response. A few great local construction companies are working hard to get us some bids so we can get started on this endeavor.

GRANBY, Mo. –For the people of Granby, their historic hardware store was the hotspot for the town.

Amy Tanner, a Granby resident of 30 years, has fond memories of her time in the store.

“I would stop by on my way to the bank every day and just stop in and see if there was anything new, and there were always people in there.”

The store is a part of the town’s rich history. It was built in 1906 and had everything the community would need. Steve Burnett, president of the Granby miners museum, is dedicated to preserving the town’s history. He said that the store used to sell many different items.

“It had everything here, everything from furniture to sporting goods to Buggies.”

But when the owner’s wife who loved the store died, the owner closed the shop, leaving everything inside.

Burnett said in the time the hardware store was closed, the building became seriously damaged.

“The building, obviously you can see developed a leak in the roof and that leak then caused all the internal damage with the floor caving in,” he said.

Granby locals have been wanting to save the building for a while, so Jamie Arnall, a local business owner, finally stepped up and took on the project herself.

“I just get tired of seeing everything falling down in our town and I just want to see it lifted up and built up.”

Arnall purchased the building and has started to get to work.

“I could just imagine it, full of booths or people walking through shopping.”

Now she wants to use it to host different stores in order to boost tourism and the local economy of Granby.

“So we’re talking about six businesses that could come to our community,” she said.

Arnell added that she hopes to also use this building to help women entrepreneurs branch out their business.

Burtnett said she can’t take on the entire project alone and needs the help of the community to help finish the project.

“So if people can donate money, there’s gonna be some opportunities, later on, to donate their time the most important part right now is to stop the building’s deterioration, and to do that we need to get a roof on as soon as possible.”

Burnett adds that Granby isn’t the only town with historic spaces in need of help.

“I also challenge you to look at your small communities all around you because there are buildings like this out there that need you as a community to step up and save them,” he said.

Saving these kinds of buildings just helps keep parts of the town’s history alive.

Mayor Ira Hawkins and South Ward City Councilmen Pat Kelly and JoAnn Lamp decide through a pretext of “safety” to vote using Granby city taxpayer funds to generate a bogus structural report to punish North Ward Councilwoman Jaimie Arnall to justify wasting another $200,000 in taxpayer money to destroy her old brick hardware building while ignoring a decrepit old church and building whose owners don’t mind having their properties demolished.

Jaimie Arnall wants to fix the old building, put in a new roof and use it for her array of businesses while restoring a 120-year old Granby Heritage building.

After much wrangling it comes to a vote. Pat Kelly and JoAnn Lamp vote to destroy the old building. Bill Kittrell not seeing the point of pointlessly destroying an old building on the North Ward given that his collegue on the North Ward wants to fix it up and so he votes “no”. Jaimie Arnall is unlawfully not allowed to vote against destroying her old building but is forced to abstain.

The editor of the Newton County Fake-News points out that with a vote of 2-2 or 2-1-1 that since a majority of the vote wasn’t reached that the Motion to hire a structural engineer at Granby city expense fails, and thus the vote is moot. This annoys Ira Hawkins, JoAnn Lamp and especially Pat Kelly while Jaimie Arnall has the good grace not to gloat.

Very important 11.22 minutes regarding $3500 of Granby's tax dollars wasted. I don't believe a 2-1-1 vote is a PASS, anyway. Regardless, the restoration process of Jamie's building will proceed with or without city council having a $3500 attempt at sabotaging her majority-felt efforts. I would like to poll just how many people know what goes on in this town. Does anyone know that the town council is trying to break Jamie Arnall before she even gets started. We need to let the mayor and council members know that we want the old hardware building to be able to get fixed up. They are breaking her spunk and spirit. They are discriminating against her even though she grew up here and has only tried to make a living in the town. It is not right.

I have thought long and hard on this all night and for the last few months.

I own the Old Hardware Store that has suddenly been the heated topic of debate.

I would like to make a proposition to all who would like to be part of the solution not part of the problem. If you have a solid plan to ensure the safety of citizens while stimulating economic growth to bring some much needed business to our downtown area, I am willing to pass on my dream of renovating the old historic building and entertain your plans. Please feel free to comment below with your intent to make a proposal of your business plan and financial plan to either renovate or tear down & rebuild.

We will set up a meeting to go over details. Once, I have received the best suited plan for our town that will benefit all, I will happily donate the property to you and begin contacting all previous donors to hand back their money with interest.

Once again, my one and only goal is to grow Granby, so let’s see what possibilities you have in mind for our downtown.

I tell yall what, a couple years ago when I expressed my excitement to some friends about purchasing a small piece of property to build a business in Granby, they all laughed, made fun of me, and scoffed. Granby has quite a reputation.

"Eww, whyyyyy Granby? There's so many better opportunities for businesses and growth in Neosho, or Joplin, or Monett or Carthage, or Springfield. Don't buy/build in Granby, it's a terrible place that has only gotten worse over the years since you've been away."

But, I purchased anyway thinking how bad could it really be? Granby just needs a little TLC, some good smart leadership that focuses on growth, beauty, and development, and perhaps a little bit of muscle, elbow grease, and a good marketing plan to make it work.

When businesses make money, the town makes money. It is simple math. I can do this.

But, I have my reservations and concerns though. The people in power don't want to help with small business loans. Instead, they call them "handouts" and greed.

They don't want to help build a good solid youth development program. They say "it's not our problem to raise and provide entertainment for your kids."

They don't want to keep their promises to the voters (e.g. 10 already allocated historical street lamps on main street).

They allow city councilmen to vindictively harass, slander and badger a Granby businesswoman who has a great vision for growth. They allow a glorified pencil pusher to tell people whom they don't like to keep their money and not to donate to community projects.

And they allow the Newton County Blab to post slanderous articles about one building and its owner who is trying their best along with some other community members to keep it alive.

I guess I'm a glutton for punishment because I still see potential in building a small business in my hometown that I grew up in. I hate to fail. There are times I want to throw in the towell because it's just not worth it to listen to all this crap, and my future business would certainly thrive elsewhere.

But, it's Jamie's love for Granby, true grit and determination to make things work against all these odds that helps keep me focused on my vision to build something mutually beneficial to my family and Granby.

It should not always be an uphill battle...I'm holding on as long as I can. Jamie, you can never leave. Granby needs you and your spunk!

This post is very hard for me to do, but I honestly feel it is in the best interest of my family, my significant other, myself, and the old hardware building that I step away from the quest to save 112 N Main Street and pass the torch onto the next brave sole with determination and hopefully much more capital than myself. I will be selling this property in the near future. With the second Structural Engineer stating this building has good bones and deserves to be saved, This decision has been extremely difficult for me, however I know it still must be done.

Starting July 8th, I will be RETURNING ALL DONATION money with 5% interest to show my appreciation for the teamwork in this fruitless effort. I will work in earnest to notify each person I have a receipt for individually over the next week. If you donated and I have not caught up with you by July 14th please contact me via Pm or call me at (417)389-9472 and I will make sure you are reimbursed ASAP. After August 1st, all extra funds we have raised for the effort will then be donated to a non-profit organization or an upcoming community project in Granby to better our community.

Just a quick heads-up

It’s time to find a better owner for the Old Hardware Store. Hopefully with a new owner it will have a fighting chance!

I’m not selling out my business nor going away. I’m not running off with people’s money and I am in NO Way giving up on growing my hometown. I’m simply shifting my focus to shedding the unnecessary stress so I can focus on what’s important in life here. Just giving you a heads up so no one is caught off guard when a for sale sign pops up.

Jeff Mann sure I can. The Granby Economic Development Committee. Prior to gifting it to the Committee I have refunded everyone’s donations towards the building with 5% interest, So I’m hoping all of those generous people will be interested in going for round two with a ambitious group of people working hard to grow the economy in our community.
